Sermon for June 9, 2024.
In Pastor Wayne’s latest sermon, he explores how Jesus consistently pushed boundaries and challenged the status quo, as depicted in the Gospel of Mark. From the outset of his ministry, Jesus performed miracles, called disciples, and healed the sick, drawing both widespread attention and the ire of religious leaders who saw him as a threat to their power and the stability with Rome.
Mark’s Gospel is succinct and direct, highlighting the extraordinary nature of Jesus. In the lead-up to the day’s lesson, Jesus healed many at Simon’s house, preached throughout Galilee, cleansed a leper, and even healed on the Sabbath, all actions that irritated the existing power structures.
As the sermon recounts, Jesus’ fame grew to the point where his own family worried for his safety and sanity. When they tried to intervene, alongside religious authorities who accused him of being possessed by a demon, Jesus refuted their claims and expanded the definition of family to include all who do God’s will, stating, “Whoever does God’s will is my brother, sister, and mother.”
Pastor Wayne emphasizes that Jesus was redefining family beyond biological ties to include all followers who embody God’s image. This inclusive vision extended to how we should treat others, as seen in Matthew 25:31-46, where Jesus equates service to “the least of these” with service to himself.
The sermon also reflects on the contemporary divisions within the Church, particularly within the United Methodist Church, which has faced schisms over human sexuality. Pastor Wayne highlights that despite these disagreements, the fundamental mission of the Church remains to serve and embody God’s inclusive love.
As the Holston Annual Conference meets, Pastor Wayne will update the congregation on the proceedings, including the ordination of Pastor Jacqueline and his own retirement. He encourages the congregation to pray for guidance and unity as they continue their mission.
In closing, Pastor Wayne reaffirms that God is at work within the United Methodist Church, the Holston Annual Conference, and the local congregations, urging everyone to remain committed to the inclusive vision Jesus set forth.
**Stay tuned for more updates from the Annual Conference and join us in celebrating the work God is doing in our community and beyond. Amen.**
